You have your plan in place to homeschool this year. Now it’s time to get your homeschool space set up. Schooling from home does not have to take up much space. It can be an extra room, a corner, a table, or a well-lit and safe basement. Do you live in an apartment or a smaller home? No biggie! I’ve got a few ideas for you!
Here’s what we will cover in the post:
- Create a vision for your schooling space
- Determine the best location for your schooling space
- Start buying and organizing
This is the fun part of making your classroom yours! Make it colorful and bright or boho and aesthetic. But first, let’s figure out key details to create a fun learning environment. Let’s dive in!
Create a Vision for Your Schooling Space
Pinterest is the best place to do this! Create a board and get to pinning! Do you envision a classroom learning style at desks or an all-inclusive experience at a large table? Does this ideal space have a modern, warm boho or bright, colorful feel? Will this space be part of a family area? Do you feel compelled to have it match the theme in that room?
There are so many options here. My thinking was to make this space a part of my living room in a corner that is well-lit, separated by a bookcase, and bright and colorful. I don’t care too much that it doesn’t match the theme of my living room, but that may matter to you. Get creative!
Determine the Best Location for Your Schooling Space
This area will depend on how much space you have available. If you have an extra room, a finished basement, or even a portion of a room to spare, you can make it work for you! Again, this space can be a little small. For example, we repurposed a corner of our family room for schooling.
Some Other Ideas:
- Kitchen table or desk
- Bedroom wall or corner
- Breakfast nook
- Sun Room
- Upstairs loft
No matter where the space is, it must be free of distractions, well-lit, and cheerful. If this area is a place for time-outs (if you give time-outs), there are better spaces for learning. We want to create a fun and positive experience around learning at home, and if the space doubles as a time-out corner, it may be challenging to get your kid engaged.
Start Buying and Organizing
I’ve got a great post on Supplies for Success with everything you need to get started on your homeschool journey. But while you wait for that Amazon order to arrive, start by decluttering your space. Freshen it up by creating an open space to envision the stuff you bought.
Our schooling space used to be a toy area; as you can imagine, it was a hot mess! Crumbs and Goldfish stuffed behind toy bins and baskets made it clear that my cleaning habits needed improving. So, get out the broom, mop, and maybe a Magic Eraser for those wall scribbles, and get to work!
This journey brings much learning for you and your little ones. As you explore this new phase, keep patience close, share excitement and validation, and pour kindness and grace into your kids and yourself. I’m so excited about your journey and happy to be with you!
Together, we rise!
